One of the reasons we ask for our customers to provide as much information as possible when calling is to help us determine the type of tow truck that will be required. There are many types of tow trucks that serve best for different situations. The tow trucks are determined by their weight classification (light, medium or heavy) and body type (tow-only or car carrier) as follows:

• Light-Duty – Gross vehicle weight rating of 8,600 to 10,000 pounds used for automobiles, pickup trucks and small cars and vans.
• Medium-Duty – Gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 to 26,000 pounds used for medium sized trucks, buses and recreational vehicles. Medium-duty vehicles can also serve vehicles best suited for Light Duty towing.
• Heavy-Duty – Gross vehicle weight rating of over 26,000 pounds used for large vehicles including trucks and trailers.
• Car carriers – flat bed vehicles used for loading one to three vehicles with the option of an additional tow on the back. Car carriers can carry all sorts of vehicles and machinery including all listed above plus farm machinery, construction equipment and for the purposes of long haul transport. It is important that the car carrier is suitable for the purpose as the size of the truck can range up to 40 feet long.

When you call on one of our tow trucks there are a few things you should expect. First look for our flashing lights to signal we are on our way; we typically turn these on when we are around 500 feet away. We will pull in front of your vehicle or on the shoulder if possible. If you are stalled in a lane, we will assess the situation and call for police assistance to help with directing traffic. Safety is our number one priority so we will be equipped with reflective gear and will keep our flashers on. You should do the same; we want to stay visible to the public so keep your hazard lights on and pop your hood if safe to do so.
Once we arrive on the scene, you may be wondering what our service truck is made up of, this will depend on the vehicle but typically you will find the following equipment:

Most important to you will be the tow devices because the improper tow device could potential damage your vehicle. For this reason, it is best to leave towing to experts; we don’t recommend attempting your own tow with an assisting vehicle for safety reasons. ​Tow hitches are similar to truck hitches but is used for medium and heavy tows but is designed to take less weight then actual truck hitches. Tow slings are typically used for vehicles that are already damaged as they are versatile. However, this approach could damage a vehicle that has a good standing bumper as the plastic is flimsy. Best to use a Wheel lift or under lift for vehicles that are broken down but otherwise are in good shape.
Some actions you can expect from your tow truck driver are as follows:

• The tow truck will position for servicing
• Wheel hocks will be placed and transmissions shifted into proper position
• The tow device will be placed and your vehicle raised
• Disabled vehicles steering wheel locked into position, transmission shifted to neutral and wheel chocks removed
• Vehicle raised again at least six inches from the ground
• Other securing devices installed
• Tow lights including stop, signal and tail lights installed on the disabled vehicle
• Final walk around inspection and the tow truck wheel chocks removed.
